There are two types of spousal or common-law sponsorship applications:
Inland: The application can be made from Canada because the person you sponsored is in Canada. This type of sponsorship allows applicants to continue to live in Canada while their permanent residence application is processed.
When the application is made from within Canada, the sponsoring person may apply for an open work permit while the sponsorship application is being processed.
Besides, spouses or partners can come to Canada by first applying for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV).

Outland: The application is made from abroad through an Embassy or Consulate.
In this case, the person you are sponsoring resides abroad and will wait for permanent residence outside of the country. In the meantime, he/she may visit you in Canada.

Sponsor Parents and Grandparents

The Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Program (PGP) offers Canadian citizens and permanent residents the opportunity to bring their parents and grandparents to Canada.

• The sponsor and their relative must sign a sponsorship agreement that commits the sponsor to provide financial support to their relative, if necessary. If sponsoring a person coming to the Province of Quebec, an “undertaking” with the Province must be signed.

• The sponsor must promise to provide financial support for the relative and any other eligible relatives accompanying them for 20 years. The time begins the day the parent or grandparent becomes a permanent resident.

• Under the Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship, Sponsors must meet the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) outlined in the chart below. The MNI figures below are Low Income Cut-Off (LICO) figures, plus 30%.

• Your spouse or common-law partner can help you meet the income requirement by co-signing the undertaking. However, if a co-signer is helping you, the co-signer must meet the same eligibility criteria as you, the sponsor. And, in addition, your co-signer must not be the person being sponsored and need to prove you have lived in a conjugal relationship for at least 12 months.

To prove they meet the MNI requirement, potential sponsors must provide their Notice of Assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) for the last (3) taxation years before applying (2020, 2019 and 2018).

Sponsor your Dependent Children

Under this category, you can sponsor your dependent children. Whether natural or adopted, to become permanent residents of Canada.
